About project

The social elite has been meeting at Cafe Louvre since its grand opening in 1902. Members of the Sursum Art Association met here, students Max Brod and Franz Kafka came here for coffee, the general meeting of the Czechoslovak PEN Club headed by Karel Čapek and President of the Republic Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was held here, and in the evenings, Albert’s regular guests were Tuesday guests. The genius loci of this unique meeting place was provided by the young glass artist František Jungvirt in his still lifes. He created the concept for the 30th anniversary of the fight for freedom and democracy, whose monument is located near Café Louvre, and as a tribute to places that have overcome various vagaries of Czech history. Jungvirt’s author’s collections are available at frantisekjungvirt.com and in selected galleries. You can then find them directly in the café from December 9 to 15 as part of the December Czech Design Week show. The project was created with this support.
